ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah — A 58-year-old man lost his life Sunday afternoon while rappelling in Pine Creek Canyon, one of Zion National Park’s most challenging canyoneering routes.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that park rangers were alerted just after noon through a 911 text message about a canyoneering emergency near the final rappel of the canyon.
People nearby began CPR before National Park Service (NPS) rescue teams hiked in to assist. It took crews over an hour to reach the area due to the steep, technical terrain. When responders arrived around 1:30 p.m., efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Because of the location’s inaccessibility, the man’s body was recovered by helicopter and transported to the Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities confirmed that his companion, who remained secured on the canyon wall, was safely rescued.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Pine Creek Canyon is well-known among canyoneers for its narrow slots, cold water, and multiple rappels—features that require technical skill and preparation. Park officials continue to urge adventurers to plan carefully, carry proper gear, and know their limits before entering these demanding routes.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and everyone impacted by this tragic event.
